#BalanceForBetter

Cobb Systems Group, LLC (CSG) recognizes International Women’s Day. Severe under-representation of women in the Technology sector continues in the United States. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) 2018 data, women made up only 25.6 percent of computer and mathematical occupations. Women accounted for 27.0 percent of those employed as computer and information systems managers, which is actually a 1.6% decrease compared to 2017.

We need to reverse this trend. Essentially, in a world and an economy where the greatest asset we have is the human mind, we are missing out on about 25% of our potential.  Great minds working together create exponential results.  I wonder how much faster would we cure cancer or achieve sustained fusion if the number of men stayed the same as today, but women made up 50% of the STEM workforce?

STEM careers are a source of economic empowerment. Consider the following:

  • Occupations in technology (Software developers, applications) are projected to grow by an average of 30.7% by 2020 with a median annual income of $101,790.
  • Immediately below that is mathematicians, which is projected to grow at 29.7% with a slightly higher salary of $103,010 annually.
  • According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), Engineering and Computer Science majors lead in projected starting salary of $69,188 and $67,539 respectively in 2019.

It’s difficult to figure out how to make an impact against such daunting trends.  Its bigger than any one of us. But the problem is not bigger than all of us if we make an effort to address it, however small.

Cobb Systems Group is committed to the achievement of gender equality.  CSG promotes the advancement of women in STEM fields through mentoring, offering internships, and participating in various programs in partnership with our local community colleges. We encourage all technology companies to make gender equality a priority and do something about it.

This year we have taken on one intern thus far… and we are happy to have her.
